  • The High Places

Significance then and now The high places in the Hebrew Scriptures were local sanctuaries for the purpose of worship especially idolatrous worship see an example in Leviticus 26:30. See also Numbers 21:28, 33:52 Isaiah 15:2, 16:12 2 Kings 14:4, 12:3, 15:35, 23:9 All these scriptures show that the high places that became polluted by unholy sacrifices and licentious rites. The Lord God condemned all the kings that gave tolerance to these places. 2 Chronicles 33:17; Some high places were devoted to the worship of Jehovah. By the time of Jeroboam, the high places of Dan and Bethel were in constant use. However, Jeroboam persuaded the people not to go to Jerusalem for worship (in frank disobedience to God). I Kings 12:31 Jeroboam made idolatrous shrines in the high places and appointed priests from among all the people (not the specified Levites). The Hebrew word bāmâth meaning “high places” get a general meaning of a “shrine” in a city or valley. Bāmâth not only specifies a high place where the Israelites go for worship but with a strong connotation of idolatrous worship. See also these scriptures 2 Kings 17:9 Jeremiah 7:31 Ezekiel 16:31, 28 Ezekiel 20:29 God asks idolatrous Israel “what is the high place to which you go?” Divine scorn is poured out on the Israelites. They ought to have known by its purpose that it was off limits to the people of God. God’s punishments for this are found in verse 33-38. I Kings 15:14 The high places were not removed although Asa had a good heart towards God 2 Chronicles 14:3 King Asa destroyed the pagan altars and high places, smashed their sacred pillars, and cut down their Asherah poles. 2 Chronicles 15:17 King Asa after deposing his pagan grandmother because she had made an obscene image, destroyed the image , yet surprisingly never removed the high places. 2 Kings 18:22; The Rabshakeh missed the point when he told King Hezekiah that he had taken away God`s high places, not realizing God wanted them removed. Bāmâth can be further defined as an elevation, a height, as well as a high place in the following scriptures. Deuteronomy 32:13, 29 Isaiah 9:12-19, Isaiah 10:5, 13 2 Samuel 1:19, 25 All sorts of important things happened on high places showing spiritual significances for example: 1. Noah’s ark resting on Mt. Ararat 2. Abraham was tested on Mt. Moriah 3. Moses receives the Law on Mt. Sinai 4. Elijah and the prophets of Baal fought on Mt. Carmel All this was in the Old Testament but in the New Testament high places are also significant. 1. Jesus went up into the mountain for praying [Matthew 4:23] 2. Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount[Matthew 5:1] 3. Jesus ascended to heaven from the Mt. of Olives and will return one day to Mt. of Olives 4. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ was on the hill of Calvary. Mountains and hills are a place of solitude/ a meeting place with God Almighty. What does the Law say? Exodus 20:3-6 Our God is a Jealous God Deuteronomy 12:1-5 God wanted the high-places of pagan worship to be destroyed. Worship should be at a place appointed by the Lord Himself and included the Tabernacle, the Temples and now in spirit and truth. Ezekiel 20:28-29; The Lord pours scorn on the Israelites offensive idolatrous offerings on the high-places. Why did the Lord tell the Israelites to destroy the Canaanite tribes? These tribes practised all kinds of forms of idolatry including the ritual sacrifice of their children. So important was this commandment to destroy these high places of pagan worship that was commented upon in the records of each King of Israel/Judah in the Books of Kings and Chronicles. Commandment to destroy High places was sufficiently implemented so that the Kings of Jews/Israel had their policy recorded/ report card in Kings/Chronicles. Examples; 1 Kings 12:31; Jeroboam built up high places and appointed non-Levities as priests. 1 Kings 13:33-34; Jeroboam’s fate 1 Kings 14:22-24; Judah`s high places (Rehoboam/Judah) 2 Kings 15:11-14; Asa (Judah) was a good king but neglected high places 2 Kings 14:3-4; Amaziah was also a good king but neglected high places Message for us today: Jesus is our Lord of lords and King of kings If we desire to be good kings, then we must surely destroy the ‘high places’ of idolatrous worship in our nation. What and where are they, you must answer for your own country. In Old Testament days good kings ought to have destroyed the high places with their altars and pillars. The best king’s physical destroyed the high places that were not dedicated to the Lord God Almighty. So how can we do this if there are no physical structures? Ephesians 2:2 Tells us that Satan is the prince of the power of the air Ephesians 6:12 Spiritual wickedness in high places 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 We can pull down enemy strongholds Could it be that when we go up to a ‘high place’ that in some way we are closer to the enemy and perhaps to the place that these demons receive worship from witchcraft, occultism etc? The hill known as Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, Scotland is often a site of pagan and occult worship. (Tell story of my experience with my son Kenneth) By prayer and other forms of spiritual warfare and by using the word of God we can bring down those enemy strongholds over our towns and cities. Exodus 17:8-11; Moses, Aaron on the hilltop, they did a successful spiritual warfare. 2 Kings 6:13-17; Open our eyes Lord to the spirit realm, there are more with us than against us! Prayer Father, in Jesus name, grant us the prayer of Elisha that your servants may have their spiritual eyes opened. Amen

  • The thief on the cross

who turned to Jesus in his last minutes alive Luke 23:33-43 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. Comment: Could you forgive those who were about to execute you, a tall order? 35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” Comment: these people were blind and clueless. 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” Comment: the vinegar was to drug him and might have been an act of mercy, but Jesus did not want it. The cross was surrounded by mockers. 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Comment: the notice was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, the main world languages of the day. 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” Comment: another mocker! 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Comment this thief recognised Jesus as a righteous man with a righteous mission. 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Comment; it is not clear exactly what the 'good' thief expected from Jesus. 43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Comment: we know from other scriptures that paradise means heaven, Wow what a result for the penitent thief. When we look at the criminals in this story, we find one is proud and thinks he can make it on his own, the other thief at the point of death becomes humble and turns to Jesus. Can you identify with either of these thieves today? The moral of the story is that it is never too late to turn to God at least whilst we are still alive. It is never too late to say you are sorry and do a U-turn in your life towards God. Amazingly, this 'last chance saloon' offer is still on the table today. Even today, it is not too late for you to turn to God through Jesus Christ and embrace Jesus as your saviour. Today, if you hear God's voice (if you feel he is tugging your heart strings) do not harden your heart. Repeat this scripture two more times. We never know in life just when God will come knocking on the door of your heart, this could be for you, a 'last chance saloon' offer. Today, this very day, you can book your place in heaven, so do not leave here today without speaking to one of the team and make your peace with God. Prayer, Lord we confess, we are sinners, help us turn to you through Jesus Christ and his sacrifice on the cross, and Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. • A Free Pardon

What can the POTUS offer someone that the Queen cannot? What can President Biden give someone, but Queen Elizabeth cannot? The answer is a free pardon. What is a free pardon? Definition: A pardon is a government/official decision to allow a person to be absolved of guilt for an alleged crime, as if the act never occurred. The pardon may be granted before or after conviction for the crime. The power to grant pardons and reprieves in the United Kingdom was known as the royal prerogative of mercy. It was previously in the absolute power of the monarch to pardon an individual for a crime and thereby commute any penalty. Since the creation of legal rights of appeal, a pardon can only be given by the government. Just imagine that even if you were guilty as charged you could get a pardon and walk away from your crimes. In the USA, the president can pardon whoever he pleases. In the same way, God also offers a pardon to the guilty e.g. in the Old Testament; Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Again, in Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more. Back then God offered a full pardon not for your crimes but for your sins (might be a crime too). All sins (murder, abuse of our bodies, abuse of our loved ones, sexual sin, theft, fraud, etc. etc.) that we commit are ultimately against God Himself, who is on the record as saying that He hates all sin. Yet God is not longing to judge his people but rather to show mercy and pardon them if they will but ask. In the New Testament we see that Jesus has authority to pardon sins; Matthew 9:1 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” Jesus Christ paid the price for your sins on the cross, speaking to believers Paul said in Colossians 2:13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having cancelled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. All your sins were nailed to the cross of Jesus, and were paid in full, the Holy Spirit reminds you now of the worst things you have done in your life so far! Do you yourself, or someone you know need a free pardon today? Every sin a person commits in their life is against God, and his anger is upon all those who will not repent of their sins. Yet we can turn away God’s wrath by accepting his sacrifice of Jesus Christ when we admit we are guilty sinners. Will you be free of your burden of sin, there is power in the blood, the precious blood of the Lamb? When I received my free pardon from God (Testimony-see link below). John Newton received a free pardon from God and that is why he wrote the hymn ‘Amazing Grace'. Will you take God’s gracious offer of a free pardon today, then turn to Jesus Christ and receive his blood to cleanse away all your sins and replace your heart of stone with a new heart of flesh. The human heart turns to stone when we pile sin upon sin in our lives. Is your heart today like flint or a rock? If that is you, this morning please speak to me or one of the team before you go. • Filled with the Holy Spirit

Luke chapter 1: A case study Luke was a Gentile physician, a companion of the Apostle Paul. Luke also wrote the book of Acts. His books give insight into the ministry of Holy Spirit. Luke Chapters 1 and 2 are popular texts at Advent. Today we look at Chapter 1 to see the events preceding the birth of the Messiah but with special emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit. We ask you to consider what are the described effects on men, women, and babies of being filled with the Holy Spirit? Chapter 1 Verse 1-4; Here is the exact truth of the Gospel as carefully investigated by the Apostle Luke. Verse 5-25; The baby carried by Elizabeth was prophesied by the angel Gabriel to have a mighty ministry of reconciliation, preparing the way of the Lord. V15 John will be filled with the spirit in his mother’s womb. Verse 26-38; Mary gives her consent Verse 39; Elizabeth welcomes her relative Mary into her house. Verse 40; The fulfilment of verse 15, the baby leaped in her womb as Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit Verse 42; Elizabeth cried in a loud voice recognized Mary’s calling and announces the great favour of God on Mary. Verse 43; Elizabeth recognized her own honoured position that Mary the mother of Jesus should come to her. Verse 45; Elizabeth recognized Mary’s belief in what God had told her. Verse 46; Mary exalts God, her soul proclaiming his glory. Verse 47; Mary’s spirit greatly rejoiced in God her saviour. Verse 48; Mary recognizes God’s high favour upon her, and prophetically recognizes all generations will called her blessed. Verse 49; Recognized of God’s great plan and purposes. Verse 50; Mary under the influence of the Holy Spirit quotes from the books of the Psalms and Job Verse 54-55; Mary remembers the covenant, by which God continues to show mercy to Israel. Verse 67; Zechariah filled with the Holy Spirit now prophesies. Verse 68; Zechariah recognized God’s plans concerning the redemption of his people. Verse 69; Zechariah continues to prophesy concerning Messiah and quotes Psalm 18:2. Verse 72-3; Zechariah declares that the Lord remembers his covenant with Abraham. Verse 76-79; Zechariah now prophesies that his son John will be called a prophet of the Most High, then goes onto prophesy outlining about the Messiah’s ministry. Verse 78; Zechariah now quotes Malachi 4:2 Verse 79; Zechariah now quotes Isaiah 59:8 These scriptures and many more showing the many and varies effects of being filled with Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11 Gives several examples of what can happen when we are filled with the Holy Spirit. The connotation here is that these examples, are not all inclusive or separate. So here is a recap from Luke Chapter 1. 1. Spoke in loud voice 2. Exalted God 3. Recognizing God’s plan 4. Recognizing God’s calling on lives 5. Recognizing the honour involved 6. Recognizing others obedience 7. Great rejoicing 8. Quotation of scripture 9. Remembers covenant 10. Prophecy concern ministry The purpose of this study is to recognise Spirit filled ministry and learn to participate in it! Amen Prayer

  • Proverbs 31:10-31

A wife of noble character who can find? More than rubies The marvellous woman described in Proverbs 31 is the type of wife that a Christian man should seek after. It is also an inspirational challenge to Christian women describing in detail the character and activities of a godly woman. But does it have anything to do with Christian men? Well, everything, because this virtuous woman is a ‘type’ of the Bride of Christ. This is also a description of the church that Jesus Christ is coming back for! Bearing this in mind, there are some wonderful truths for both men and women in it. Proverbs 31:10-31 10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. His bride (or a Godly wife) is a very capable woman and as such is highly sought out treasure of incredible value. 11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value that a wife could bring. She cares for her husband and children spirit, soul and body. Jesus has placed His confidence and trust in us as his Bride and gave us all that we need for life and godliness. 12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. The Godly wife does only good not evil to her husband all the days of their life together. She need not be perfect but always have the best of intentions. As his church, it is our duty and privilege to bless and serve God, never to offend or dishonour Him all the days of our life. 13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. The good wife and the church prepare the raw materials, good deeds, and is eager to work for her husband’s benefit or her Lord’s glory. 14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. The good wife (and church) is prepared to go out of her way to provide for food and nourishment for her own family/flock. Pastors please note. 15 She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. The good wife is up early, praying and providing for their families in various ways. 16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. This is no limp wristed, simpering woman, but a strong decisive woman. She did not need permission to do this and even more, she financed the transaction herself! 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She is spiritually speaking fighting fit, ready, willing and able to be about the household’s or the Lord’s work. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. She knows that her labour in the Lord is not in vain. Our hearts and homes should always be open to the needy. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She is ‘hands on’ with the work of her household and so the church with the Lord’s people and work. 20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. She recognises the Lord’s attitude to the poor and is obedient to it. Giving to the poor has come her lifestyle! 21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. When adversity comes her family will be ready because she has prepared them. 22 She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. She clothes herself with good deeds in every area of life, private and public. 23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. Because this good wife runs all the things in her home so well, this frees her husband to do God’s work and perhaps participate in civic leadership. Our husband (of the church) is the King of Kings and is seated at the right hand of the Father. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them and supplies the merchants with sashes. The good wife (as well as the church) supplies good things that can be passed on to others, and are profitable. 25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. This good wife trusts the Lord and enjoys his all-round security. We in the church are clothed with the robe of righteousness and are secure in Jesus Christ. (See our sermon on eternal security). 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She speaks the truth of God and realises that as part of his church, we are the only people with the truth available to share. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. She is vigilant, guarding everything important to her family. The believers should be guarding our Church Fellowship and families and keeping ourselves busy with the master’s business. 28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: I do praise my own wife for her being this type of wife and mother 29 “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." Well done thou very capable woman, you are a top-class wife! 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. The believing wife who fears the Lord is truly blessed and truly a blessing to her family. 31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. One day the Lord himself will praise such a wife. I am so blessed to have one. We shall receive an eternal reward from Him who has the holes in His hands. Summary of key learning points This message is for both women and men, whether as a virtuous wife and/or as the Bride of Christ You are a vital part of the Bride of Christ. You have a noble character, so much so that you are rarer and more expensive than rubies. Jesus has placed his confidence in you and has put all his riches at your disposal. You will try to honour Him and strictly avoid bringing shame or dishonour to His holy name. You are busy about your master’s business, redeeming the times for they are evil. You are prepared to go well out of your way for his purposes particularly to help the church family. You rise early to pray and be about our God-given chores particularly in providing for your family and His. You are strong in the Lord and are entrusted to make important decisions and are able on occasion to finance ventures yourself. You are spiritually fighting-fit, ready, able and willing to do the Lord’s work. You know that your service to the Lord is not in vain and you are always opened to helping the needy. You are a ‘hands-on’ person regarding the Christian life and walk. You recognise God’s great love to the widows and orphans and are willing to bless them. When problems and difficulties come you can handle them, even your family is prepared. You clothe yourself with good deeds in every area of life, both private and public. Your husband is King of Kings and is seated at the Father’s right hand. You are not only to do good deeds but teach others how to profit from your example. You are clothed with the robe of righteousness and are secure in Jesus’ love. You and your brothers and sisters are the only ones speaking the truth in this life. You are vigilant and alert watching out for threats or danger to your family and God’s family. You want to hear the divine accolade ‘Well done thou good and faithful servant’. You fear the Lord and are mightily blessed because of it. If this is you then you will receive your eternal reward from the holed hands of Jesus Christ, bless His holy name! Amen Personal Prayer

  • The fragrance of Christ

And the fragrance of the Holy Spirit Many years ago, I attended a Christian conference in Brighton, England. The main speaker was Bill Subritsky who posed the question of how do we recognize the anointing of the Holy Spirit? One perhaps surprising answer is that we might recognize him by his fragrance. Bill said that sometimes believers could smell the fragrance of God and backed up his claim by giving a fascinating example! To smell the fragrance of God is not a common experience but it is scriptural. We do need to be careful about our experiences on their own without scriptural precedent, nevertheless we walk by faith and not by sight like other people. More recently we did a study on the wise men’s (magi) gifts to Jesus. Particularly the frankincense and myrrh because of their fragrances seem to be pertinent to this study. So, does God have a fragrance? Here is what the scripture says. Exodus 30:23-38; In the Tabernacle we find the incense altar. The myrrh and cassia were prepared with olive oil and this was a perfume for sacred use only (common use was forbidden). Anointing anything with this holy oil, imputes holiness to whatever is anointed by it. Oil, as you know, is a type of representation of the Holy Spirit. Aaron the high priest was consecrated with such fragrant oil. Matthew 3:16 and Hebrews 4:14-16; Jesus Christ our High Priest received the Holy Spirit without measure at his water baptism. It is both scriptural and logical to infer Jesus as our high priest would be scented by myrrh, aloes and cassia (see Psalm 45:8). In John 12:3; we find the woman performing an act of anointing Jesus for burial lead prior to his death. In John 19:38-39; Jesus our high priest was embalmed in myrrh and aloes. Psalms 45:6-8. All his garments are perfumed with myrrh, aloes and cassia and we are identified with his fragrance. In 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 which suggests that because we know Jesus Christ, we have his scent! We are the fragrance of Christ to those who are being saved, but the stench of death to them that are perishing! No wonder we believers sometimes get up some people's’ noses! The fragrance of the Holy Spirit A missionary in Japan tells the story of how he went into a room and immediately asked if a member of the royal family been in the room. His host was surprised but answered yes and asked the missionary how he knew. The missionary answered that he recognized the fragrance of the perfume only worn by the Japanese royal family. It would be lovely if we could recognize the fragrance of the Holy Spirit when he was present! Some years ago a bible teacher (the late Roger Price) claimed to smell freesias sometime when the Holy Spirit is moving. Would you recognize the scent of freesias? Important to remember if you want your fragrance released Incense must be burned, and herbs/spices need to be crushed to release their fragrance. Perhaps we will need some burning or crushing in our lives to release the fragrance to God? Amen Personal prayer

  • The chief cornerstone

The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone Most of us at some time in life will experience some form of rejection. Family or so-called friends might decide to terminate their relationship with us under various circumstances. We might feel let-down, bewildered and angry that people can be as unkind, but it is a lesson unfortunately we need to learn in this world. Even when we go for a job interview or some selection process for sports or team ventures, we might be rejected. In all these forms of rejection we must be humble, forgiving and fight any tendency towards bitterness. This what Jesus Christ himself experienced. The one people in the world who should have known who and what the Son of God would be like, were the Jews. But when He came to them, most of them including their secular and religious leaders rejected and dismissed Him as an impostor. He was the precious stone which the builders rejected yet he was and still is the most important stone in the building known as the church, that is the cornerstone! The corner or cap stone is usually laid at a ceremony in honour of a new building. All the other stones fit in around the cornerstone. So, is there someone whose judgement that we can trust? When we look at people we can be so influenced by external things, such as their appearance, demeanour, dress sense, personality etc. But when God considers a person, He looks right into their heart. A clear example of this was when the Lord sent Samuel the prophet to anoint one of the sons of Jesse as King over Israel. Read Mark 11:25 John 1:11 1 Peter 2:6-8 1 Samuel 16:6-11 Samuel considered each one of them from the natural point of view, how tall or handsome that they were. But God makes it quite clear in 1 Samuel 6:7 that He is interested in a person’s heart. The inner qualities not the external are much more important. So, what does this mean in practice for us in our day to day lives? Firstly, when we are rejected and put down, our loving heavenly Abba Father is always there to remind us of our true value, which is that you are valuable and precious to Him. So much so that He gave His only begotten Son…John 3:16. The world’s value system is superficial and dangerous. Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light! Do not trust outward appearances, Jesus told the Pharisees that they were white-washed tombstones, white on the inside but inside dark and horrible, full of dead men’s bones! Secondly, we must ask the Lord for discernment in all the appropriate areas of life. The wrong choice of a marriage or business partner can easily ruin someone’s life. Running with the wrong crowd of friends has also caused much unnecessary suffering and grief in some lives. We can take a good example from the disciples after the resurrection when they gathered to choose a replacement for the traitor Judas Iscariot. They prayed indicating that only God Himself truly knows what is in a man’s heart and therefore they asked the Lord to show who His choice for the vacant position was. The Lord then spoke to the hearts of the disciples and they chose whom they believed that the Lord had already chosen. In conclusion, no matter what people say or do to you, God will always love you and never let you down. Since only God truly knows a person’s heart, we must ask Him to guide us in all our decisions involving people. We might not always get the answer we want or like, but we can console ourselves by the knowledge that the Lord’s choice will always be the right one! • Psalm 51

The sinner's guide to repentance When we sin as believers our attitude to the sin is all important. Sometimes we might try to pretend there is no sin or even to justify it, other times we point the finger to others. David was a believer who committed a terrible sin. This Psalm teaches us what to do if we also fall into sins. Structure of Psalm 51 Verse 1-12 – King David’s confession and plea Verse 12-19 – King David’s anticipation of forgiveness and restoration Read Psalm 51: 1-19 Comments Verse 1; Plea not for just deserts but mercy according to God’s nature Verse 2; Thorough cleansing needed inside and out Verse 3; The repentance process can only begin with confession Verse 4; All sin is ultimately against God. His laws are right and just. Verse 5; The fallen nature of man but cannot be used as an excuse Verse 6; God not only desires truth in our hearts but is able to impart it to us Verse 7; At Passover, the hyssop was dipped in the blood of the sacrificial lamb Verse 8; David’s heartfelt desire to be freed from the destructive effects of his sin and restored Verse 9; Only God can cover and then remove our sins Verse 10; David’s heart was unclean, but he recognized his need for God to create something in him that was absent Verse 11; Part of the fear of the Lord is the dread of being banished from His presence. In the new covenant Jesus promised not to remove the Holy Spirit from believers, but we can still grieve the Holy Spirit with our sins Verse 12; Plea to restore first love and sustain us in it Verse 13; Only when our hearts and lives are right before God can we be in any position lead unbelievers to the Lord. Verse 14; Only God can remove the stain of the sin of murder from a man’s heart. The graceful act of God’s forgiveness produces our most joyful praise! Verse 15; By faith David begins to receive his cleansing and forgiveness Verse 16; The Lord wants heart repentance not ritual offerings Verse 17; The Lord will accept truly repentant people Verse 18; Once we are restored to fellowship with God then He can begin to rebuild our lives and ministries and the Church of Jesus Christ. Verse 19; Then with clean heart and hands we are in the right position to offer our service to the Lord Summary of key points When believers sin we need to 1. make full confession and acknowledge of our sins and guilt (1 John 1:9) 2. realize that our sins hurt God and that only He can forgive them 3. realize that the blood must be applied 4. know we receive our forgiveness by faith 5. know that when we are restored, it is right to praise God and rededicate our service to Him. Amen Lets do it, lets pray!

  • How to be born again

We are reading from the Gospel of John chapter 3 3:1-2 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that you do, except God be with him. This important man was probably part of the rich and powerful Gurion family. His name was Nicodemus, and he was highly influential Pharisee and religious leader you could say a top man in Israel. Nicodemus addresses Jesus with respect calling him ‘Rabbi or teacher’. Nicodemus thinks that because of the miracles Jesus had performed that God must be with him. 3:3 Jesus anticipates Nicodemus direction of conversation but cuts straight to the chase by saying ‘unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Jesus is telling Nicodemus and in a sense all mankind that a second birth is necessary to enter all God’s ways , purposes, and blessings here on earth. The natural birth gives us the 5 senses and the second birth opens our spiritual senses of hearing, seeing, and sensing the things of God. Without the new spiritual senses how can anyone experience the joys of God’s kingdom or God’s rule in our lives? 3:4 Nicodemus replies Jesus ‘How can a man be born when he is old, can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb and be born’? The idea here is that Nicodemus is saying to Jesus surely you are not suggesting a second physical birth! 3:5 Jesus answered Truly, truly , I tell you that ‘Unless a man be born of water [1] and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God’. This means each person who is born in a natural biological and physical birth must also experience a second supernatural spiritual birth as to enable them to enter all the joy and blessings of life in God’s kingdom. 3:6 Jesus now describes the rules of natural and spiritual generation, that which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Jesus is saying that the sinful human nature (the flesh) transmits its fallenness to each baby born through natural childbirth. However, the new spiritual nature can only be transmitted to a person by the Holy Spirit. 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. Jesus tells the puzzled Nicodemus, do not be amazed, or surprised or begin to wonder why it is that (Jesus insists) that he must be born again (born anew). As a religious leader Nicodemus was well acquainted with salvation through keeping the torah yet this person Jesus was clearly saying that it was mandatory to be born again to be able to enter God’s kingdom. Something had to happen via the Holy Spirit working on Nicodemus’ heart so that his eyes could open to the Kingdom of God. 3:8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but canst you cannot tell where it comes from, or where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Jesus now gives an illustration or metaphor to help Nicodemus understand what he means. We cannot see the wind, yet we are clearly aware of the effects of the wind. We can hear it and we can see its effects on leaves and trees and plants. In the same way when the wind of the Holy Spirit blows on your soul or mind, we cannot see it but are aware in hearts that new things are taking place. Maybe we can feel compassion or love as never before, or perhaps a new generosity of spirit. The Holy Spirit moves in and through the born-again hearts in a mysterious way as he wills. Nicodemus would be stunned to hear this as he was still focused on keeping the Law. 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, how can these things be? Yet again the stunned Nicodemus asks, ‘how can this be so’? It is clear he had not a clue about how God intended salvation to work. Perhaps his strict training in the Law immunized him to the Gospel? We break off the story at this point to consider what does this mean to you and me? If you are a follower of Jesus, then this story is a good way to introduce Jesus in a conversation that could lead to that person coming to Christ. If you are not yet a follower of Christ , you must realize that Jesus’ stark message to Nicodemus is that we must be born again to enter into God’s realm and enjoy all his wonderful benefits including forgiveness of all your sins. But you say, how can I do it, The bible is clear (Romans 10) says 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. We now need to turn this belief into a prayer spoken from your heart. You can find such a prayer in the link below https://www.psalmonesermons.com/post/jesus-explains-the-new-birth [1] The likely picture here to Nicodemus would be like a mikvah (bath for ritual cleansing) which although enough for physical cleanliness was not enough to cleanse in a spiritual sense. The writer of the current Intercessors for Israel prayer letter notes "In fact, the clearest description of what it means to be born-again or born from above is found here" (Ezekiel 36:25-28) "This is most likely why Yeshua expected Nicodemus to understand what He was talking about in John 3:5-10." I found that helpful. (Posted on behalf of Rob Isbister).

  • Called to be an intercessor?

An intercessor is one who takes the place of another or pleads another’s case. Jesus came to bridge the gap between God and sinful man. 1 Timothy 2:5 There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yes rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Jesus lives to make intercession for us, his church i.e. Jesus stands in the gap between Father God and us. Hebrews 7:25 Tells us that Christ is today making intercession for us at God’s right hand. Jesus today is asking for people who are willing to stand in the gap and through their intercessions bring about all the changes necessary for his return. Ephesians 6:12-18 Verse 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Our enemies are high ranking evil spirits in the heavenlies. Verse 13-18; tells us how these powers are defeated. Our purpose in donning the whole armour of God, is to enter the spiritual warfare which rages around us. As believers we have authority in the name of Jesus over all powers of darkness. Amen. Daniel 10:12-13 Shows us although God answers our prayers immediately, the powers of darkness (fallen angels) could hinder the answer arriving, as in the message God sent to Daniel. God has given us the means by praying in the Spirit to overcome these obstacles. Romans 8:26-27 Shows that when we pray in the spirit our efforts are directed through the Holy Spirit to do such work as is necessary according to the will of God in our situation. Successful intercession requires us to have the agape God-kind of love which encompasses compassion since we are sometimes required to take the place of the person for whom we are interceding. As believers we can intercede for the lost, the sick, against sin, against the powers of darkness, and for our country. 1Timothy 2:1-4 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. This tells us how to begin our intercessions and other types of prayer. Is the Lord God calling you to be his intercessor today? Will you intercede for your church, your family, your city, or your nation? Amen Prayer

  • What is truth?

Truth is a person The facts of life (about human reproduction) are usually given to our children in response to such questions as these. Where do babies some from? What about gooseberry bushes? Storks? What are the birds and the bees? What about the facts of eternal life? How does a person receive the new birth and become a follower of Jesus Christ? What is the truth of the new birth and how do we find it? Pontius Pilate asked of Jesus ‘What is Truth’ and I suspect Pilate asked in a very cynical tone. His meaning was probably that, how could there really be any solid, unshifting truth? There is something in the heart of a man that greatly desires a solid reality, an absolute measure, or a rock-solid basis for our human lives, yet so few find it. Morals when made relative to the times, the ideas and philosophies of men are like shifting and sinking sand. We are constantly bombarded by lies from the media, press, TV, cinema, and music. The best minds in the world in 1491 thought the world was flat, although it is described in the bible as a globe suspended on nothing. In a court of law witnesses take an oath to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help me God, because justice can only be done through knowing the true facts of the case. What about you, do you promise to be truthful? What is Truth? Dictionary Definition of truth: conformity to fact; honesty conformity to reality. A truth (can also mean) a religious tenet based on revelation. Anyone who wants to know the meaning of life, God, and the universe most know the basic truths i.e. the facts which conform to reality, so that they can develop an informed opinion. Consider this, that the truth cannot be shaken or broken down, but only disbelieved. Tonight we are going to look at the true facts of life and then consider what we must do with them. John 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, if you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed. 32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33They answered him, we are Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, you shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, verily, verily, I say unto you, whoever commits sin is the servant of sin. 35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed. John 14:5Thomas says unto him, Lord, we know not whither you go; and how can we know the way? 6 Jesus says unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me. 7 If you had known me, you should have known my Father also: and from henceforth you know him and have seen him. 8Philip says unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it suffices us. 9 Jesus says unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and you hast have not known me, Philip? He that has seen me has seen the Father; and how say you then, Show us the Father? 10Believe you not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwells in me, he does the works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake. 12Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto my Father. 13And whatever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. Comments Verse 6; The Gospel truth and reality is that absolutely no person comes to Father except through Jesus Christ. The fact that Jesus is the reality of God is confirmed in verse 9. All of God that can be seen, was seen, and is seen in the person of Jesus Christ. Unbelievers do not know or believe this fact. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and Life, and so we learn that ‘truth’ is a person! Verse 12; Truth and reality. If we have faith in him, we can and will do similar works and perhaps even perform creative miracles. Do you believe this? John 14:15-17 The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, the Spirit who reveals reality, the spirit of actual (eternal) facts. The sad fact is that the unbelievers do not know him. John 17:17 Your word is truth because it was inspired by the Spirit of truth. 2 Timothy 3:16 says all scripture is God breathed and inspired by Spirit of truth. Each time we read bible, we are comparing our lives and actions to the truth. So we know when it says in Colossians 1:21 that we obtain peace through the blood of the cross. We know that this is an absolute fact and the Gospel truth. Did the truth about Jesus Christ change your life well if so, it seems that the truth can be known? Matthew 16:13-20 Verse 16 The revelation, the reality, the factual truth of who Jesus Christ is. Verse 18 Petros (Peter) is a small moveable rock Petra a large unmovable bedrock, is the revelation that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, as revealed by the Spirit of Truth. We proclaim this truth, and we know from our experience that it is true. 1 Timothy 3:15 The people in the church are called the ‘pillar and foundation of the truth’, no one else has the truth. So what do we do with all this truth? Live it and give it. If you saw someone going to walk over a cliff inadvertently, would you try to stop them? Of course you would! Would you try to stop someone you love from going to hell, would you tell them the truth, tell them the spiritual facts of life and death, of heaven, and of hell? Only those who have the Spirit of truth can tell the truth to those who do not have the Spirit. The government, the army, the intelligentsia, the press does not have the truth to give. Only the Church of Jesus Christ Only the individual churches Only the individual believers like you and me Are you going to keep the truth to yourself? Are you going to keep tight lipped, and watch them drown in their sins or will you throw them some solid truth to cling to? The cost of telling the truth;John the Baptist told the truth about the Light of the World and about the King’s sin, so they cut his head off. Jesus is the truth, the reality of God in the flesh so they crucified Him. The disciples preached the true gospel so most of them were martyred. And if you tell the truth so you will be probably be rejected, despised, ostracized, cast-out or maybe even worse. Nevertheless Jesus commands you to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and teach them to obey all the truth. Jesus will be with you, as you tell the truth at work, in the street, in the garden, in the schools, in the prisons, yet know this that wherever you go to tell the truth Jesus will be with you. The truth is only in the church, it is not out there, it is in here! Tell the truth and shame the devil! Amen Prayer
