The 7 churches of Revelation, what can we learn from them?
THE CHURCH IN PERGAMUM:
THE COMPROMISED CHURCH

Pergamum was not an easy place to follow Jesus.
The city was filled with pagan temples, emperor worship, and symbols connected to the occult. Everywhere believers looked, they were surrounded by pressure to compromise their faith.
Yet Jesus commended the church for standing firm.
"I know where you live, where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name." (Revelation 2:13)
Even when faithful believers such as Antipas were put to death for refusing to deny Christ, many Christians in Pergamum remained loyal to Jesus.
Roman authorities demanded that citizens publicly declare, "Caesar is Lord." Those who refused often faced severe consequences. Christians instead declared, "Jesus is Lord," even when it cost them everything.
But there was a problem.
While some believers remained faithful, others began mixing Christianity with pagan practices. They wanted the benefits of following Christ while still fitting in with the surrounding culture. To protect their jobs, social standing, and livelihoods, they compromised their convictions.
Jesus' warning was clear:
"Repent therefore!" (Revelation 2:16)
The lesson for us today is just as relevant.
We may not face Roman emperor worship, but we still face constant pressure to blend biblical truth with the values of the world around us. The temptation to compromise is always present.
Jesus calls His people to stand firm, remain faithful, and refuse to dilute their faith for acceptance, comfort, or personal gain.
The reward for those who overcome is wonderful:
"To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna... I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it." (Revelation 2:17)
Christ offers true spiritual nourishment, complete forgiveness, and a personal relationship that will last forever.
Challenge: Where is the greatest pressure on Christians today to compromise their faith?
Prayer: Abba Father, help us to stand firm in a culture that often pulls us away from Your truth. Give us courage to remain faithful, wisdom to recognise compromise, and hearts that desire You above everything else. We ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.
